Whitmuir House is an impressive, elegant house set just over 4 miles from Selkirk, in the midst of the beautiful Scottish Borders and perfectly positioned for exploring a region that is incredibly rich in history.
With comfortable accommodation and a warm and welcoming atmosphere it is the ideal place for a family get together or holiday with friends with a touch of grandeur and lots to see and do right on the doorstep.
On entering you are welcomed by a large cloakroom with plenty of space for muddy boots and coats. The rather grand drawing room has an open fire to gather around in the evenings and the formal dining room is great for enjoying meals together whilst planning the next few days’ activities.
The charming and spacious dining kitchen is the real heart of the house and is kept warm and cosy by its 4 oven Aga. There is also an electric hob and oven as an alternative for cooking and the large pantry, which once would have been used by the butler, comes in particularly handy for storing food and drinks.
There is an attractive en suite double bedroom downstairs and up the unusual spiral staircase are two further double bedrooms (one with dressing room, en suite and decorative fireplace) and two twin rooms, a sizeable walk through seating area with TV, two good sized bathrooms and a handy WC.
When you step outside the house you are surrounded by a large private garden with lots of mature plants and trees. Although not enclosed, the garden has a ha ha sunken wall that allows the breathtaking views all the way out to the Carter Bar and Cheviot hills to be enjoyed without interruption. There is also a croquet lawn and pavilion that has been positioned so you can sit and watch all the action – it even has its own little kitchen for making drinks.
View from Whitmuir House
At the National Nature Reserve at Whitlaw Mosses, in walking distance, the interesting wetlands include willow scrub rich with lichen, areas of open moss carpet, feathery sedge swamps as well as sweet smelling herb and grassy meadows that make absolute paradise for butterflies and dragonflies.
Try out clay pigeon shooting at the range Braidwood in Midlem (2 miles) with lessons available for everyone from children and total novices right up to experienced professionals.
Selkirk (4 miles) has a range of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. The town has strong roots in the textiles industry and the mill tours at the Lochcarron Visitor Centre offer a fascinating insight into the traditional processes that are still used to make quality knitwear, tweed and tartan. There is also a picturesque 9 hole golf course in Selkirk that welcomes visitors.
Sir Walter Scott’s impressive former home Abbotsford House (7.5 miles) on the banks of the River Tweed is an interesting place to visit for history enthusiasts with wonderful gardens to wander around and pretty walks along the banks of the river. The station at nearby Tweedbank allows you to visit the beautiful capital of Edinburgh in under an hour’s train ride for shopping, sightseeing or taking in some culture.
The Borders has an exceptionally varied landscape, from the gentle rolling hills and moorland in the west to the high cliffs and rocky coves of the Berwickshire coastline in the east. There are also some wonderful long stretches of sandy beaches on the coast near Berwick-upon-Tweed (40 miles) that are easily accessible for seaside day trips in just over an hour’s drive.
